Months away from end of term, councilor Rafael Luis “Rafa” Fernando resigned from his post in the University Student Council (USC). Former candidate Sitti Meryam Agatha “Aji” Reyes stepped in Monday to fill his seat.

Reyes, a fifth year Business Administration and Accountancy student, ranked 13th in the councilor race in last year’s elections, making her eligible to assume the position.

USC logoFernando, who also acted as the USC’s Secretary-General, submitted his resignation letter October 2013 due to family issues but it was only confirmed last December, according to USC Chairperson Alex Castro.

The Office of Student Affairs and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs approved Reyes’ appointment as councilor.

Reyes joined the USC general assembly last Monday, said Castro.

In a short interview, Reyes said the USC has so far given her minor tasks, mostly to assist in the Council’s events.

“My term as a councilor ends in two months but I hope it will be enough time to contribute and be of sufficient use to the students and the council,” she said.

Home Economics representative Alexa Nacional and Engineering representative April Ramos now stand as officers-in-charge for the Secretary-General post, Castro said, as talks to appoint a new Secretary-General will be held in the next USC general assembly on Jan. 20.
