STAND UP dominates USC for second straight year

Article by M.C.

For the second straight year, the Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND UP) saw a sweeping victory as the party’s candidates won 23 out of 32 posts in the UP Diliman University Student Council (USC).

STAND UP candidate Latrell Felix was elected USC chairperson with 4,372 votes over Jaira Del Mundo of UP Alyansa ng mga Mag-aaral para sa Panlipunang Katwiran at Kaunlaran (UP ALYANSA), who obtained 2,486 votes. Felix is an incumbent councilor of the USC.

Mary Sunshine Reyes, also an incumbent councilor from STAND UP, will be vice chairperson after winning 4,767 votes over UP ALYANSA’s Tristan Rafa’s 1,917 votes.

Felix and Reyes will succeed incumbent USC Chairperson Jonas Abadilla and Vice Chairperson Izabelle Dolores, who are both from STAND UP.

All of the red party’s councilor bets made it to the top 12 of the councilor race, with incumbent College of Mass Communication Student Council Chairperson Ma. Kristine Joy Adriano clinching the top post with 4,351 votes. She is followed by Kat Dalon and Ron Medina, who earned 4,321 and 4,130 votes, respectively.

No bets from UP ALYANSA landed a spot among the standard bearers and the councilors of the next USC. The blue party, however, secured three out of 18 available college representative positions.

The UP ALYANSA councilors are Bernard Bejo as the College of Education Rep. with 288 votes; Lynette Manaay as College of Music Rep. garnering 68 votes; and Rickie Ricarder as School of Economics Rep. with 302 votes.

Meanwhile, six independent candidates were elected as college representatives. They are Beatriz Pineda from the College of Home Economics; Cieneilo Mengullo from the College of Science; Gian Del Mindo from the College of Engineering; Sean Limbaga from the National College of Public Administration and Governance; Giezelle Villanueva from the School of Statistics; and Rowinner Bautista from the Technology Management Center.

A total of 35.32% or 8,446 out of 23,916 of students participated in the second remote student council elections. This is the lowest voter turnout in the past 12 years.

The newly elected members of the USC will lead the university amid intensified threats against academic freedom with the looming presidency of ousted dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and his running mate Sara Duterte.

In a two-day miting de avance, Felix said her USC would organize students to protest against the Marcos-Duterte tandem, recognizing the “importance of unity to defeat tyranny and dictatorship.”

“Andyan ang konseho na titindig para sa [mga estudyante], magmomobilisa tayo, mag-oorganisa tayo ng student body upang tumindig. Nandyan tayo para tutulan ang proclamation ng Marcos-Duterte [tandem],” she said.
