Unopposed candidates to lead College of Science student council
By Yvette Morales
Unopposed candidates in the College of Science (CS) will lead the next student council (SC), with all except the vice chairperson coming from Matatag, Aktibo, Tumutugon, Tunay, Epektibo, at Responsable (MATTER), an unaligned local party.
John Christopher Lawrence Morillo won as chairperson, garnering 573 votes, besting 422 abstentions.
Dale Wilson Garcia II, the only independent candidate, will sit as vice chairperson with 627 votes. 368 abstained.
Meanwhile, Ryan Lintao of KAISA bested Dylan Salcedo of ALYANSA as CS Representative to the USC. Lintao got 378 votes while Salcedo got 304. 313 voted abstain.
MATTER filled 5 councilor seats, with one seat left vacant. Anna Beatrice Constantino topped among the five with 517 votes, followed by Paula Abella Danan with 484, Searle Aichelle Duay with 475, Tristan Cesar Manalac, 474, and Edjohn Aaron Macauyag, 426. 288 abstained.
Except for the National Institute of Physics (NIP) and National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB), all institutes have their respective representatives.
MATTER’s Jian Kenzo Leal withdrew as NIMBB representative because of academic reasons, Morillo said.
“Kailangan nya raw kasi i-maintain yung grades nya for scholarship so ‘di niya kaya isabay sa council,” he said.
Dr. Giovanni Tapang, chairperson of the College Student Electoral Board in CS, said the unfilled councilor post will be filled from the department representatives. A special election will be also held for the two unfilled department representative seats.
Out of 2,692 eligible voters in CS, only 995 voted, casting a 37.85-percent turnout. Only 53.77 percent of the undergraduate students voted, while only a mere 5.58 percent of graduate students cast their votes on Thursday.
