STAND UP wins landslide victory in first remote elections

Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND UP) saw a landslide victory after the party’s bets filled 25 out of 31 posts in the UP Diliman University Student Council (USC).

STAND UP bet Jonas Abadilla will serve as the next USC Chairperson after garnering 4,765 votes over Daine Torregosa of UP Alyansa ng mga Mag-aaral para sa Panlipunang Katwiran at Kaunlaran (UP ALYANSA), who received 2,853 votes.

Abadilla will replace incumbent USC Chairperson Froilan Cariaga, who was appointed for a holdover term since October last year.

Izabelle Dolores under the banner of STAND UP was elected as the next USC Vice Chairperson after winning 5,400-2,708 over UP ALYANSA bet Tricia Quarte.

Dolores will replace incumbent USC Vice Chairperson Richard Pagaduan, who also assumed a holdover position last October.

All of STAND UP’s councilor bets made it to the top 12, with Lance Al Francis Daniel clinching the top councilor post with 4,526 votes. He is followed by Mary Sunshine Reyes with 4,417 votes, and Ajay Lagrimas who earned 4,124 votes.

No bets from UP ALYANSA secured a spot among the standard bearers and the councilors of the next USC.

The blue party, however, was able to land five college representative positions out of 17.

These are: Robyn Aquino as the College of Education Representative with 238 votes; Luke Tongson as the College of Music Representative garnering 165 votes; Warren Dela Torres as the School of Labor and Industrial Relations representative with 22 votes; Faye Mondoy as the College of Business Administration Representative with 540 votes; and Anthony Aggabao as the Technology Management Center Representative after having won 29 votes.

Fort David, the sole independent elect, won as the College of Science Representative with 734 votes.

As of June 15, 12 noon, a total of 10,070 out 22,556 or 44.46% of students participated in UP Diliman’s first remote student council elections.

After serving in a holdover capacity, the USC transitions to a new set of elected officers who will navigate the university amid the ongoing pandemic.
