Maskom FSTs elect first complete council after 2 years

After two years of being marred with vacancies, the UP College of Mass Communication (CMC) Freshie, Shiftee and Transferee (FST) Council will have its first complete set of officers.

The last time the CMC FST council had no vacancies was in 2020 under then-Chairperson Justin Peter Guzman.

The results of this year’s CMC FST elections were announced on Sunday evening, Oct.15.

About 56% or 105 out of 188 FSTs participated in the elections, which was held online from Oct. 12  to 14, according to the CMC Student Council.

Taking the role of chairperson is Gemly Mendoza, a first-year communication research student, who secured 86.67% of the total votes.

Meanwhile, freshman journalism student Antonio Quirolgico will serve as vice chairperson after garnering 78.1% of the votes.

First-year journalism student Guia Mistades, who secured around 80.95% of the votes, will represent the college to the University Freshie Council.

How vacancies were filled

Previous CMC FST councils resorted to appointments or assumption of positions to resolve their respective vacancies.

The CMC FST council of A.Y. 2021-22 lacked a vice chairperson and treasurer as no candidate ran for the said positions.

Journalism students Rianne Lizardo and Lyjah Bonzo were appointed as vice chairperson and treasurer, respectively, following a deliberation by the incoming and outgoing FST councils.

The following year, the council also had vacancies in the positions of chairperson, secretary and treasurer.

To resolve these, then Vice Chairperson-elect Emili Capule had to assume the highest post in the council, while Film Representative-elect Skyler Montefalcon served two positions after also taking the role of vice chairperson.

Meanwhile, journalism student Pietro Albano and broadcasting student Nicole Becerra were appointed as secretary-general and treasurer, respectively.

The term of the incoming CMC FST council is expected to begin next week.
