[OPINION] It is darkest behind the camera’s flash

  • Posted on 29 November 20213 December 2021
  • byGuinevere Latoza and Ivy Ferrer
Photojournalism seems like a noble job, but the industry reveals a harsh reality. Behind the eye-catching images lurk questionable assignments and freelance work. [EDITORIAL] Elections, the impunity theater

  • Posted on 23 November 20215 February 2022
  • byTinig ng Plaridel
Impunity becomes more potent in the elections. Now is not the time to merely chronicle this violent history. Not when our colleagues perish without reason. Not when we’ve seen what the state can do to silence the critical press.

[EDITORIAL] From one dictator to another: Unearthing each other’s grave

  • Posted on 30 September 202130 September 2021
  • byTinig ng Plaridel
One of Ferdinand Marcos’ children is sitting comfortably in the Senate. The other, seeking higher office. His wife, scot-free from multiple counts of graft. Right from the grave, the dictator is rising unstopped.

[OPINION] No, Belo, I don’t need to buy my beauty

  • Posted on 15 September 202120 September 2021

[OPINION] We don’t need another Hidilyn Diaz story

  • Posted on 25 August 20219 September 2021
  • byJohn Mark Garcia

EDITORIAL: Athletes are more than their weight in gold

  • Posted on 10 August 202126 July 2022
  • byTinig ng Plaridel
Credit-grabbers like Roque represent how politicians act in the country’s time of triumph. The only thing Duterte’s administration made possible for athletes is a conundrum: Olympians need to grab the gold to get the bare minimum, while politicians do only the bare minimum to grab the most gold.

[OPINION] The war of tarps: How the government’s ideology war is visual, too

  • Posted on 26 April 202126 April 2021
  • byRenz Palalimpa
The tarpaulin is a simple recipe: a piece of material with bold and striking typography, carrying an even bolder message. It has simultaneously been the ally of activists in protests and the weapon of politicians currying votes. The government is now using it to red-tag activists, creating the latest battlefield in its war against critics.

[OPINION] Pinoy rap celebrates and justifies the male gaze

  • Posted on 14 April 20215 February 2022
  • byWaxee Galang
The doors of female representation in music swing both ways: it’s either glorifying or objectifying them. These depictions strike too close to home as they are immediately heard in Filipino rap.

[OPINION] I got vaccinated abroad as a tourist. When can Filipinos have their turn?

  • Posted on 29 March 202116 September 2021
  • byBuboy Figueroa
It was undeniably exhilarating at first, but the excitement didn’t last long. There was a lingering feeling of guilt knowing that a Filipino like me already received the vaccine that early.

EDITORIAL: Immunity, not impunity

  • Posted on 10 February 202110 February 2021
  • byTinig ng Plaridel
As all eyes look towards the arrival of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines, the government must not drop the ball again this time. The only way forward is to secure an effective, science-based vaccination plan that is not thwarted by greed of those in power.
