Union decries ‘unfair’ dismissal in sexual harassment case
After two employees from the University Hotel were fired due to complaints of sexual harassment, the University Hotel Worker’s Union (UHWU) said they have not been fairly represented in the case and that the decision was not “humane.”
In protest, union members hung a tarpaulin along Aglipay street, in front of the University Hotel, which reads, “Dr. Grace Gregorio Union Buster ng UHWU.”
It has since been removed by order of the Resident Manager.
Senatoriables pledge commitment to youth advocacies
The full participation of the youth must be prevalent in the coming May 13 elections to ensure the victory of independent and progressive candidates, said Makabayan bet Neri Colmenares during the signing of the 2019 National Youth Covenant on May 4.
The youth plays a big role in the 2019 midterm elections, since approximately 31% of the registered voters are aged 18 to 30, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Other senatoriables Erin Tañada, Samira Gutoc, Pilo Hilbay and Chel Diokno of Otso Diretso, and Labor bet Leody De Guzman also vowed to forward youth concerns and advance people’s rights as they pledged to the covenant.
OVCSA consults org heads re: Freshie Recruitment Ban
In response to the Office of the Student Regent’s (OSR) call to repeal the Freshie Recruitment Ban (FRB), the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA) held a consultative meeting with student formations on Monday.
The Freshie Recruitment Ban is legitimized in the 2012 University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Code of Student Conduct, which classifies the following as an act of Harm to Persons:
“Accepting a student who has not completed a one-semester residency in UP Diliman for membership in a registered student association, except in the case of a fraternity or
sorority for which the residency requirement is one academic year.”
