Former UP Women’s Basketball Team (UPWBT) prodigy turned doctor Fille Claudine Cainglet led the inaugural draft class of the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) as the first overall pick for the Glutagence Glow Boosters.
The 32-year-old top prospect rose above 177 aspiring Filipina ballers in the draft pool and is now set to relive her basketball career in the country’s premier pro women’s sporting league.
Cainglet shared in a Facebook post that she was in the middle of performing a medical operation at the *East Avenue Medical Center when she learned the news of becoming the league’s top draft pick.
Fellow Fighting Maroons Samantha Tan and Ayra Nil Hufanda joined the roster of drafted Iskas who were selected in the 10th and 11th rounds of the virtual draft by Glutagence, respectively.
Hufanda will join forces with fellow UPWBT alum Cainglet as one of the league’s most formidable backcourt duos, with Tan’s versatility on court set to be shown on full display as the newest forward of the Glow Boosters.
Unfolding a new chapter
The Cainglet surname is no stranger in the local sports scene as Fille Claudine played for the UPWBT in UAAP Seasons 69 to 73, while her younger sister, Fille Saint-Merced, led the star-studded Ateneo Lady Eagles to the women’s volleyball finals twice in Seasons 74 and 75.
More than a decade after her collegiate basketball stint came to an end, Cainglet decided to enter medical school at the University of East Ramon Magsaysay to achieve her dream of becoming a sports doctor.
Even in the midst of pursuing her medical ambitions, she was still able to proficiently showcase her athletic arsenal as she took part in inter-med sporting leagues and became a multiple-time Palarong Med champion.
At present, she continues to serve her final residency year at the East Avenue Medical Center in orthopedic surgery.
From one dream to another, the UPWBT alumna now heeds the call of joining the WNBL to relaunch her sporting career in the biggest stage of women’s basketball in the Philippines.
Completing the top three draft picks are the Splash Sisters’ Camille Claro and Khate Castillo, with the offense-driven duo joining Cainglet at Glutagence.
Other notable selections include UAAP Season 79 Mythical 5 member Snow Peñaranda and Season 82 Finals MVP Monique del Carmen for the Pacific Water Queens.
The WNBL’s four-team slate is composed of the Glow Boosters with 12 draft picks, Queens with 9, STAN Quezon Lady Spartan with 10, and Parañaque Lady Aces with 8.
