The University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons were trampled by the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 49-73, in the second round of the UAAP Season 82 Women’s Basketball Tournament, today, at Ynares Center Antipolo.
Putting up a perimeter point, Lady Maroon Rei Sanchez opened the first quarter to kick off an 8-0 run for her team, but Lady Archer Marga Jimenez slowed down UP’s momentum with a two.
Jimenez, Lee Sario, Chuchi Paraiso and Maureen Okoli shortly went on a 15-5 streak, which gave the Taft-based squad a lead at the end of the frame, 13-15.
Maximizing her opponents’ errors, Iska cager Lulu Ordoveza started the second canto with a free throw. DLSU racked up buckets in and out the perimeter to answer back.
Failing to maintain their strong defense, UP could not escape the Lady Archers’ offensive prowess.
Pesky Pesquera said that her team’s lack of maturity dealt a hand in this.
“Close-knitted naman yung team. Although, sa loob ng court, medyo kailangan pang i-develop ‘yun kasi nga bata pa yung team,” shared the UP Women’s Basketball Team skipper.
(Us players are close with one another, but we still need to develop our chemistry because the team is still young.)
Taking advantage of their opponents’ weaknesses, DLSU pulled away at 25-34 leading up to halftime.
The third frame saw lopsided scoring as UP buried nine points over DLSU’s 28.
In a timeout within the canto’s last two minutes, Lady Maroons Coach Paul Ramos told his team that their defense was not enough to earn a lead. He lamented UP’s inconsistent scoring and suggested State U to circumvent the Lady Archers’ half-court pressure.
Attempting to apply her mentor’s advice, Pesquera wrapped up the quarter with two markers from the charity stripe, 34-62.
UP made the most out of the matchup’s last 10 minutes by putting away 15 cudgels versus DLSU’s 11. Their late run failed to bag them a win as they experienced a breakdown in defense, 49-73.
Pesquera led the Lady Maroons with 19 points, whilst Sario dominated DLSU’s scoreboard with 13.
Despite the loss, captain Pesquera believes that her team can overcome this slump through correcting their mistakes.
“Medyo maganda naman yung nilaro namin nung first half. Ganun din yung nangyari sa’min nung Adamson, two games ago. Nakakapanghinayang lang kasi hindi namin kayang gawin ‘yun hanggang dulo,” Pesquera iterated.
(We played really well in the first half. This also happened to us in our matchup against Adamson [University] two games ago. It’s a shame that we couldn’t maintain our strong performance until the end.)
Hoping to end the season with a bang, the UP Lady Maroons will be going head-to-head against the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles on October 30 at UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
QUARTER SCORES 13-15, 25-34, 34-62, 49-73.
