The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Lady Maroons extend their losing streak after suffering another defeat to the Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons, 74-100, today, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The Diliman-based squad played with all their might, but fell short due to empty possessions.
UP inched towards their adversaries in the fourth quarter with a 19-21 run, but their ball mishandling prevented them from taking home a win.
Even though Lady Maroons Jona Lebico, Pat Pesquera, Lourdes Ordoveza and Kat Hidalgo strengthened their defense in the third quarter, AdU’s swift offense outwitted them, 55-79.
Lady Falcons Lhyn Bilbao and Nathalia Prado swooped in on UP and shot three markers collectively to open up the second canto.
Meanwhile, AdU paved a 30-13 pass that earned them a 55-31 score at the end of the second frame.
UP failed to dominate AdU in the first quarter as well, earning a 18-25 standing due to their indecisiveness.
Despite the loss, UP Womens’ Basketball Team (UPWBT) Captain Pesquera believes that her squad can improve by becoming confident in themselves.
“Kaya ng mga players na kunwari ibaba yung bola, ipasa nang maayos, pero nagiging indecisive dahil lang kinakabahan [sila] o dahil feeling nila na may tao sa harap nila na di nila kaya,” said the UPWBT Skipper.
She also added that the hardships her team is facing can only help them better prepare for what is ahead.
“Ngayon at least maranasan na nila ang ganitong kahirap na situation. In the future, they’ll know how to adapt,” Pesquera iterated.
Lebico led UP with 19 points, whilst Novie Ornopia became AdU’s top scorer with 23 markers to her name.
Pesquera hopes to see the UP community support the Lady Fighting Maroons in their next matchup against the National University Lady Bulldogs on Sept. 18, 8 a.m., at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
QUARTER SCORES: 18-25, 31-55, 55-79, 74-100.
