Showing their true colors to a sea of maroon, the University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad dedicated their performance to the UP community once again in the UAAP Season 81 Cheerdance Competition (CDC) today, November 17, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Attentive and hopeful, Iskos and Iskas alike were anxious to witness UP’s second year back in the competition after skipping Season 79.
Setting foot in the blue mats once more, the rookie-laden team contextualized the ups and downs of being a UP student with the theme Iskulay ng Sablay.
“We wanted to show what it means to be an Iskolar ng Bayan and what a sablay means to the whole UP community,” said Team Captain Mikaela Angela Sales.
UP Pep Squad Coach Pio Opinaldo explained that the colors present in the sablay were also integral to this sentiment.
Maroon, Green, Yellow, and Purple represented love, resilience, happiness, and hope respectively.
After pouring their hearts out planning and performing their piece, the Diliman-based cheerleaders earned an overall score of 568.5 and placed sixth in the competition.
They were awarded 318 points for dancing, 67.5 for tumbling, 73 for stunts, 59 for tosses, and 65 for the pyramids while 14 points were deducted from their routine.
Despite not achieving a podium finish, co-captain Maegan Cabrera was proud of her teammates and commended other schools for their growth as well.
Next year, UP hopes to improve themselves as they continue to represent what it means to be an Iskolar ng Bayan. “It’s not about winning, but it’s about giving a performance for the people who matter us,” said Cabrera.
The UP Pep Squad also finished in sixth place in last year’s CDC. TNP
