The University of the Philippines Women’s Chess team scored back-to-back wins in the 10th and 11th rounds of the UAAP Chess Tournament to strengthen their grip on the second place spot, while the Men’s Chess team split their assignments to remain on the sixth spot.

The Lady Maroons dominated the UST Tigresses, 3-1, in round 10 and continued on the rampage by completing a sweep of the UE Lady Warriors 4-0 in the 11th round.

The UP woodpushers led by Season 75 MVP Christy Bernales all scored in the process, holding their opponent to two draws. Board 2 Roxanne Atayde completed a two-game sweep while Arvie Lozano, Board 3, and Joanna Barbosa, Board 4, each scored a win and a draw.

The Diliman-based squad accumulated a total of 29 points placing them at solo second and 4.5 points behind league-leading DLSU Lady Archers (33.5). FEU is third with 26.5 points.

The UP Men’s Chess Team, on the other hand, prevailed over Ateneo Blue Eagles in Round 10, 2.5-1.5 but narrowly lost to the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 1.5-2.5.

After a win by Team Captain Willbert Pilarta in Board Two and a draw by Paulo Cristobal in Board Four, the Maroons were on their way to an upset of Adamson as Aldous Coronel looked poised for a win in Board 3, fighting a comfortable position and ahead in time 30 mins. to 30 seconds.

The sophomore woodpusher, however, failed to convert his advantage and lost in endgame.

The Men’s team garnered a total of 19.5 points and is still at sixth place behind National University with 24.5 points. FEU still leads the Men’s Tournament (28.5) but AdU (27), UST (26.5) and DLSU (26) are closely behind.

The 12th round of the UAAP Chess tournament will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Enrique Razon Sports Complex, De La Salle University Taft.
