The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons bowed down to the University of the East Lady Warriors, 2-3, in the UAAP Badminton Tournament Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

UP’s Pauline Tan gave the Maroons their first win after scoring 21-18, 9-21, 21-13 against Kimberly Gatpolintan of UE, tying the count at 1-1. Earlier, the Lady Warriors took the opening game with Rochelle Andres’ 21-14, 21-12 victory against Bianca Legaspi.

For the doubles matches, Andres teamed up with Laurece Pamorada to close out Maroon pair Caitlin Dionisio and Abigail Garcia in two sets, 21-16, 21, 13. Tan and Legaspi, now playing as partners, got a game back by stunning Warrior duo Gatpolintan and Dianne Castro, 21-13, 21-17.

After obtaining an injury from her doubles match earlier, a limping Pamorada overwhelmed Ellaine Malelang despite her early lead at the first set, 22-20, 21-9, to take UE’s first victory for the season.

Meanwhile, the National University Bulldogs maintained a clean slate of 2-0 after sweeping the Fighting Maroons.

NU’s Andrei Babad slipped past UP’s Ethan Malelang after two sets in the Maroons’ opening match, 21-15, 21-18, while Charlo Tengco struggled to give UP their first win for the day but Bulldog Emmanuel Garcia still dominated after three sets, 23-21, 14-21, 27-25.

NU won the doubles matches with relative ease. Babad and Philip Escueta won 21-11, 21-11 over Maroon pair Malelang ang Roberto Pineda, while Jason Oba-ob and Aries Delos Santos demolished Tengco and Jelsson in a 21-13, 21-9 victory.

Escueta went on with NU’s winning streak after prevailing over Maroon Miguel Leonardo in two sets, 21-8, 21-10.

Both the men and women’s teams now have a win-loss record of 1-1 after grabbing their first win against the Adamson University Soaring Falcons Saturday with 3-2 and 2-1 victories, respectively.
