The University of the Philippines Women’s Basketball Team doubled Adamson University’s turnovers and gave up critical offensive rebounds to suffer a 72-53 manhandling in the first round of UAAP Season 76 Sunday at the San Juan Arena.

The Lady Falcons converted 30 points off 34 UP turnovers and scored 17 markers on second chance points. They also grabbed 33 offensive boards compared to UP’s 17.

“We committed 30 turnovers. That’s a lot for one game. I think there’s been no team who committed 30 turnovers and won the game. Medyo careless kami sa bola,” said UP Head Coach Ramon Garcia, whose crew suffered their second straight loss.

While finishing the opening period close with an 11-8 AdU lead, guard Jinky Balista, who lead all scorers with 20 points, capped a 15-2 Falcon spurt with a trey to pull away 25-10 midway in the second frame.

Forward Analie Tongco then exploded for two consecutive rainbow shots with less than a minute to go as the Lady Falcons’s defense limited UP to an eight-point production in the second quarter to post a 33-16 halftime spread.

But the Lady Maroons slowly razed a 19-point third quarter deficit as forward Antonia Wong gunned for an 8-0 blitz entering the final canto at 49-38.

Guard Katrinne Topacio, who finished with 10 points and 6 boards, then opened the pay-off period with a jumper to trim to deficit to single digit at 49-40. But Balista unloaded a dagger trey which spearheaded a 13-6 breakaway to shift the momentum back to AdU and put a comfortable 62-46 cushion going into the last three minutes of play.

Spitfire guard Bea Daez then single-handedly brought UP to within 12 on a three-pointer plus a lay-up off a steal, 51-63. But that was as far as UP could go as they went scoreless in the next two minutes to finally put the final nail on the coffin.

Curiously, the coaching staff of the Maroons has been complaining on the travelling and double dribble violations not called by the referees, echoing some complaints shouted by the UP crowd with the game calling.

“There were some calls talaga na they should have called it, especially the travelling. But that’s the way it is,” said Coach Garcia.

Wong came off the bench to post another double-double performance with 12 points on top of 10 rebounds, six coming from the offensive end in 14 minutes of play. Daez finished with 12 markers, six boards and two assists while Patricia Tatel chipped in 10 points, 15 rebounds and five swats for the losing cause.

UP Lady Maroons’ next game will be against the University of Santo Tomas on Thursday, 9 am at the Blue Eagle Gym.
