The National University triumphed over the University of the Philippines, 68-61, in the second round of the UAAP season 76 women’s basketball Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs pounced on the Lady Maroons early, going up 11-0 to begin the game. They never looked back since then.

“Before this game, we still had a one hundred percent chance of making the final four. But after this loss, medyo bumaba, 80 percent na lang,” UP Head coach Ramon Garcia said, as the loss sent his squad to a 4-5 card.

The Maroons spurted a 9-0 run of their own, ignited by point guard Bea Daez as she dropped in five of her points from long jumpers.

She led UP with 18 points, while center Patricia Tatel contributed 12 markers. Karen Salapong found the rhythm from outside, dropping in 3-of-6 three-pointers, en route to scoring 11. Antonia Wong was a big contributor inside, leading the game with 14 rebounds off the bench.

But UP turned the ball over 28 times, which led to 20 points off turnovers for NU.

In the decisive start, the Bulldogs forced four turnovers from the Maroons within the game’s first four minutes.

Anne Gupilan scored six of her points during that first quarter barrage. She led the pack of Bulldogs as she converted 17 points and eight boardss. She also sank 2-of-5 triples and pulled down eight rebounds.

Afril Bernardino tallied 14 points, while Denise Escoto chipped in 11 points off the bench for NU.

Up next for UP is the University of the East on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
