UP Women’s Basketball Team (WBT) Pat Pesquera shoots from mid-range during their first game at the University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavilion, September 4.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Lady Maroons started their UAAP Season 82 journey with a disappointing loss to the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 47-78, at the University of Santo Tomas Quadricentennial Pavilion, September 4.

Jona Lebico paced the Diliman squad with 11 points, while rookie Rhea Sanchez tallied nine points and seven rebounds.

Sanchez was one of the three rookies, alongside Erica Gusilatar and Ash Taulava, that played and managed to score.

She led the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring five straight points to keep the Maroons’ hopes alive after trailing by 28 markers.

However, their performance was not enough to lift the UP squad over. The Maroons gave up 29 turnovers while only shooting 33% from the field.

Despite the loss, new UP head coach Paul Ramos remained optimistic with the development of the rookies.

“They’ve exceeded my expectations for today’s game,” Ramos said.

“They may have committed some mistakes, but that’s (a) part of being a rookie and being young in the UAAP. I’m giving them the leeway to make those mistakes,” he expounded.

Ramos added that his biggest concern is making sure that the team’s health is at its best. This comes after skipper Justine Domingo suffered an injury in the first few minutes of the game.

“We have to rethink our adjustments. Not on the technical aspect, but on the conditioning part,” he said.

The Lady Maroons will face their next challenge this Saturday, September 7, as they face the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers.
