The University of the Philippines (UP) beach volleyball teams both pulled off a 1-1 win-loss result in their matches on Day 2 of the UAAP Season 79 Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Sands by the Bay court.

The UP beach volleyball teams both bested the University of the East (UE) for their first games, but surrendered to the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

The Diliman duo of Alfred Valbuena and Wendel Miguel edged out UE’s Geric Ortega and Ruvince Abrot, 21-10, 21-17, while their female counterparts Arielle Estrañero and Diana Carlos beat UE’s Angelica Dacaymat and Judith Abil in straight sets, 21-16, 22-20.

However, Valbuena and Miguel fell short to UST’s Christian Arbasto and Kris Roy Guzman in a similar straight-set fashion, 13-21, 14-21, while Estrañero and Carlos bowed down to Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez of the Lady Tigresses, 17-21, 14-21.

Both Diliman beach volleyball teams stated UST’s experience as a crucial factor for their losses.

Kilala talaga yung UST sa beach volleyball,” Valbuena said. “Yung tandem nila ilang years na nagt-training.”

Estrañero echoed that and admitted that UST is ahead of UP in terms of skill and experience.

After the opening weekend, the UP men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams hold a 2-2 and 3-1 win-loss cards, respectively.
