UP remains unscathed in UAAP women’s badminton

Defending women’s champion University of the Philippines Lady Shuttlers turned back De La Salle University, 3-2, to remain unscathed in the UAAP Season 78 badminton tournament at the Rizal Badminton Hall, Wednesday.

In the first singles match, season 77 rookie of the year Mary Ann Marañon overcame DLSU’s Arianne Rivera in three sets , 15-21, 21-15, 21-11 while Paola Bernardo defeated Mariya Anghela Sevilla, 21-16, 21-15, in the second singles match.

The Lady Maroons won the tie after the tandem of reigning MVP Jessie Francisco and Eleonor Christine Inlayo subdued Alyssa Leonardo and Kristelle Salatan, 22-20, 21-19 in the first doubles match..

The Lady Archers, on the other hand, drew victories in the second doubles and the third singles match as Sevilla and Aries Montilla edged Marañon and Marina Caculitan, 21-10, 21-19, while Nicole Albo defeated Inlayo, 21-19, 17-21, 21-14.

UP now holds a 3-0 card while La Salle dropped to 2-1 in the tournament.

The men’s team, meanwhile, fell prey to the dominant defending champions National University, 0-5.

Games for the men’s and women’s team resume on Saturday as they face the University of Santo Tomas at 10 a.m,  and Adamson University at 2:30 p.m., respectively.
