UP men’s chess team dominates UE; women’s team bows to FEU

The University of the Philippines Men’s chess team continued their improved performance while the women’s team slipped into back-to-back losses after the eighth round of the UAAP Chess Tournament.

The University of the Philippines Men’s chess team continued their improved performance while the women’s team slipped into back-to-back losses after the eighth round of the UAAP Chess Tournament.

Willbert Pilarta, Aldous Coronel, and Paulo Cristobal bagged victories on boards one to three, while John Edison Ubaldo’s game resulted in a draw on board four against the University of the East in round eight.

The trio also delivered wins for UP in the seventh round against the Ateneo de Manila University, 3-1.

With 14.5 points, the team currently ranks sixth behind De La Salle University with 17.5 points. League-leading Adamson University is far ahead with 21.5 points.

Meanwhile, Christy Bernales, Arvie Lozano and Lawrean Fulcher lost against the Far Eastern University on boards one to three for the women’s team. Team captain Joanna Barbosa settled a game on board four with a draw, gaining them 0.5 points in round eight.

The Lady Maroons came off a 2.5-1.5 beating against defending champion La Salle in round seven, accumulating a total of 19 points to tie with FEU at second place. The Lady Archers remain solid with 25.5 points for solo first.

The men’s team will next face FEU, while the women’s will go against Adamson in round nine on Saturday, Feb. 8.
