The University of the Philippines men’s foil team settled for the bronze medal after succumbing to the University of the East, 45-32, in the semi-finals of the UAAP Fencing Tournament Sunday at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

National team standout Nathaniel Perez led UE with his great offensive play. The Warriors’ team also included men’s individual foil gold medalist Michael Nicanor, Manoah Baal and Kenneth Paraso.

Igi Cui, meanwhile, redeemed his disappointing performance in the individual event, pacing the Maroons with 13 points. Other fencers in the UP foil team include captain Brex Arevalo, foil silver medalist JC Turano, and Josh Lam.

Lahat ng teammates ko sabi ‘Igi, kaya mo ‘yan!’ kahit sumuko na ako sa sarili ko. I couldn’t have done what I did without them,” Igi said about the key to his great performance. “They trusted me. Siguro ‘yung trust nila na ‘yun ang nag-push sa akin.

The Maroons collected a total of three medals, including two silvers in the men’s individual sabre and foil events, for a fourth place finish overall.
