MANILA – The University of the Philippines closed the year with a triumph after dismantling on Wednesday the University of the East in straight sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16, in the UAAP 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

Despite dominating all the scoring departments in the game, Nicole Tiamzon wasn’t satisfied with their performance.

“Our game had lapses and we had too many errors,” Tiamzon said. “We also relaxed a bit [in the game].”

The trio of Kathy Bersola, Angeli Araneta, and skipper Tiamzon led the domination for the Lady Maroons, contributing 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.

Team captain Shaya Adorador was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Warriors with 10 points, while Leuseht Dawis added seven.

The Lady Warriors managed to obtain the advantage early in the first set, 11-13, but the Lady Maroons rallied five straight points to reach the second technical timeout with the lead, 16-13.

The Diliman-based team started to pull away as they produced eight unanswered points to take the set, 25-14.

The second set was tight, with UE going to the first technical timeout with the lead, 7-8, via an attacking error by Bersola.

The Lady Warriors tried to keep the set close, but the Lady Maroons fought back and took the driver’s seat to the second technical timeout, 16-13.

Errors by Adorador and setter Abegail Ponon put up set point for UP, 24-18.

Bien Juanillo attempted to save the Lady Warriors, but Araneta ultimately won the set for the Lady Maroons with a power tip, 25-19.

UE lost steam in the third set as UP plunged ahead to the first technical timeout with a comfortable lead, 8-2.

The Lady Maroons managed to stretch their lead to seven going to the second technical timeout, 16-9, courtesy of attacks by Bersola and rookie Caryl Sandoval.

UE failed to stop UP’s outburst as a down the line attack by Monica Ortiz sealed the set and the game for the Lady Maroons, 25-16.

With the victory, the Lady Maroons now hold a 2-3 win-loss record to end the year.
