MANILA – The University of the Philippines faltered on Saturday during its match against National University, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 12-25, 9-15, in the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Leading two sets to one, the Lady Maroons’ offense broke down in the last two sets to hand the game to the Lady Bulldogs.
“In the fourth set, we relaxed as we thought it’s in the bag, and there were errors,” Lady Maroons team captain Nicole Tiamzon said in Filipino.
Kathy Bersola and Vina Alinas topped the Lady Maroons score sheet with 16 points each. Tiamzon and Angeli Araneta chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Jaja Santiago and Jorelle Singh led the Lady Bulldogs with 20 points each, while Myla Pablo contributed 16 points.
Both teams played tug of war early in the first set as the Lady Maroons led two points going to the first technical timeout, 8-6.
The Diliman-based team first reached the second technical timeout, 16-15, via an Araneta spike.
UP stretched its lead, 22-17, after an error from Singh. A Kathy Bersola drop and an Alinas attack sealed the set for the Lady Maroons, 25-21.
The Lady Bulldogs came back in the second set as they dominated early and reached the second technical timeout on the driver’s seat, 10-16.
Bersola attempted to save the set by snatching two points, but a Singh attack ended the set, 19-25.
The third set was highly contested with the Lady Maroons rallying six straight points to the first technical timeout, 8-7.
UP reached set point with a crosscourt kill by Alinas, 24-21. NU put up a scare by saving two set points, but a kill by Bersola finished the set for UP, 25-23.
The Lady Maroons seemed complacent in the fourth as the Bulldogs dominated early, 4-8.
Alinas sent a down-the-line attack in an effort to rescue the Lady Maroons, but the Lady Bulldogs took six consecutive points to send the game into a deciding set.
The Lady Maroons struggled to find their rhythm as NU led in the fifth set, 8-4.
A Santiago ace and a kill by Singh set up match point for the Lady Bulldogs, 7-14.
Bersola tried to rally UP by snatching two points, but NU ultimately seized the set and the game via a Singh attack, 9-15.
With the defeat, the Lady Maroons now holds a 0-2 record.
UP will next face University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
