The University of the Philippines disposed the listless University of the East, 25-8, 25-18, 25-16, to clinch their first win in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Among all the scorers for UP, surprise starter Julienne Calugcug proved to be the revelation throughout the game. She scored a game-high 11 points, including 10 spikes, to finally lift the Lady Maroons into the win column of the team standings.
Team skipper Angeli Araneta and Katherine Bersola also registered 11 points apiece to fuel a dominating win by the Maroons. Sheeka Espinosa contributed eight points to boost the UP morale going into the second round of eliminations.
The Diliman-based squad exploded for seven unanswered points mid first set for an aggressive start, a momentum they kept to finally grab the coveted win.
In the early part of the second set, the Lady Warriors challenged to claim the lead against the Lady Maroons. But the combined efforts of Araneta, Calugcug, and Nicole Tiamzon overpowered the Recto-based squad to push UP ahead two sets to none.
The Warriors once again threatened to steal the show in the third set, through their top scorer Shaya Adorador. Yet again, Bersola and Calugcug lead a 7-3 run in the homestretch to finish the match in a convincing fashion for State U.
UE struggled offensively as none of their players scored in double figures. Adorador lead the team in scoring, collecting only nine points. The loss also stretched the Lady Warriors’ losing streak to 23, dating back to Season 74.
