The University of the Philippines settled for second place after falling to Far Eastern University, 1-0, in Game 2 of the UAAP Football Finals Sunday at the FEU-Diliman pitch.

The Maroon Booters, who played in the finals without ace striker Jinggoy Valmayor due to a red card penalty, lost in their last two finals appearances after conceding the crown last season to Ateneo de Manila University.

FEU striker Jes Melliza scored the lone goal of the match after converting a header in the 71st minute.

Despite the painful loss for the Maroon Booters, Ace Villanueva was hailed as the league’s Best Goalkeeper while Patxi Santos was named as the league’s Rookie of the Year.

“The team fought [sic] hard till the end. Congratulations FEU for winning the championship!” Valmayor tweeted.

“Thank you UP community for supporting us this season! Next year ulit!” he added.
