MANILA – The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons dropped their game today with a huge blowout loss to defending champions De La Salle Lady Archers, 31-66, at the Blue Eagle Gym.

This game marked the third consecutive loss of the Lady Maroons for the first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 women’s basketball division.

Prior to the game, UP coach Ramon Garcia said that the Lady Maroons would put their focus on denying the full court pressure defense of which La Salle is notably known for. He also added that they were looking to play a team-brand of basketball and denied putting up ISO plays for the Lady Maroons.

However, the Lady Maroons failed to execute as they were limited to a 21% field goal percentage in the entire game and were forced to commit a total of 24 turnovers, mostly unforced. The Maroons were also off beyond the arc, only converting 3 out of their 17 attempts.

“I’m satisfied with the shots taken however they were really not going in. We showed poor transition defense and our shots, hindi lang talaga sila pumapasok (but they were just not going in),” Garcia said.

Two players scored in double-digits for the Taft-based troop. Leading the Animo charge is Alyanna Ong who chipped in 11 points along with seven boards followed by the 10-point performance from her fellow starter, Steph Vergara who drilled both her shots from the perimeter while the 6’6 behemoth of the Archers. Fretzie Oyao added seven markers and provided the intimidating post presence for La Salle.

Meanwhile, Bea Daez scored her team-high six points coupled with five rebounds to lead the Lady Maroons to a white-flag finish.

The team will face Adamson University on their next game on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
