The University of the Philippines’ quest of reclaiming the title they last won in 2012 took a blow after suffering two consecutive losses in UAAP Season 76 Football Tournament at the FEU-Diliman field.

The Fighting Maroons earlier endured a tough 2-0 opening day loss against UE, the only team who was not able to register any win last season.

With the upset at the back of their minds, UP started energetic early in Friday’s game. Striker Jinggoy Valmayor almost netted a goal in 9th minute but his attempt flew over the bar.

The Green Archers retaliated in the ensuing play as Charleston Uy converted a miss by Nathan Alquiros in the 11th minute for the lone goal in the first half, 1-0.

UP refused to give up and mounted a comeback as the Maroons’ resilience led to a game-tying goal by Valmayor in the opening minute of the second half, 1-1.

But the Lasallian squad ran away with another goal courtesy of Inigo Gonzales in the 50th minute, 2-1, to retake the lead for good.

The UP Maroons remain at the cellar of the standings with no points to show, while DLSU is tied for fourth with Ateneo garnering three points. The Red Warriors, meanwhile, is the solo front runner with nine points after picking their third win versus NU earlier Friday.

The Maroon booters will next face National University on Tuesday, December 3, 1pm at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
