The University of the Philippines Women’s Basketball Team committed four crucial turnovers and muffed eight charities in the final frame to suffer a 60-51 setback at the hands of National University in the UAAP Season 76 Thursday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the miscues on passes and torched the Lady Maroons with guard Trixie Antiquiera’s explosion, who came off the bench to score 12 points, all from rainbow country.
Forward Afril Bernardino also provided the spark for NU displaying a double-double performance with 12 points to go with 10 rebounds, seven coming from the offensive glass. Anne Gupilan complemented the Bulldogs by finishing with 10 markers and 12 boards.
“Yung box out namin….offensive rebounds ng kalaban. S’yempre ‘yung missed free throws ay opportunities. Sayang talaga,” said UP Head Coach Ramon Garcia. NU grabbed 21 offensive rebounds against UP’s 15, most during the crucial stretch of the fourth frame.
With the score tightly contested at 35-34 entering the pay-off period, NU stepped on the gas with Antiquiera capping a 13-6 run via a dagger trey to give the Lady Bulldogs a 48-40 lead with 5:25 left to play. She knocked down three outside shots in that stretch.
Patricia Tatel responded for the Maroons with a lay-up off a dish from Sheerose Luna. The Lady Maroons then forced a steal in the ensuing play only to find Antonia Wong committing a double-dribble violation on a fastbreak play.
Luna dished a foul from down low but split her charities, 48-43, with less than four minutes left in the final frame.
Threatened by the Maroons’ pressure, Gupilan spearheaded an 8-2 blitz to post their first double digit lead of the game at 56-45 going into the final two minutes.
UP answered back by hacking five unanswered points, 56-50, on a jumper by Bea Daez and splitting all three trips from the line. But the Maroons seemed to have ran out of luck as they missed three of four charities in the final minute adding to their free throw woes.
“Medyo masama ang shot selections namin this game. I hope makabawi kami sa next game,” said coach Garcia of UP’s 20% clip from long-range compared to NU’s 41.7%.
The Lady Maroons will next face Adamson University on Sunday, July 7, at San Juan Arena.
