The University of the Philippines punctuated their first round of the UAAP Season 76 Women’s Basketball Tournament with another victory after trampling the University of the East, 67-55, Sunday at the San Juan Arena.
With the win, the Lady Maroons now hold a 3-4 card, tying for the third spot in the standings with Adamson University and University of Santo Tomas.
“With a 3-4 [win-loss record], achievable ‘yung final four, I tell the players na we just have to take it one game at a time,” said UP head coach Mon Garcia.
The two teams were head to head until the second quarter, but the Diliman squad sprang to a 9-0 run sparked by Sheerose Luna’s hook shot during the last two minutes of the first half to pull away for good.
Forward Bernice Furagganan and team captain Karen Salapong, who managed a five-of-five from the free throw line, each successfully converted both their charities. Guard Bea Daez capped their assault with a basket in the paint to give the Maroons a 34-22 cushion at halftime.
They never looked back from then on.
Salapong once again posted a double-double performance, pacing 21 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Forward Katrinne Topacio supplemented with 11 points and seven rebounds. Center Patricia Tatel took the lead in the rebounding department with 14 boards.
Meanwhile, Diane Ventura and Chlaire Tacula pitched in 16 and 10 points respectively for UE, while Mary Valdez provided eight points and six rebounds.
