The Office of the Secretary of the University (OSU) released the official list of nominees for the 21st president of University of the Philippines (UP) yesterday.
The majority of candidates currently hold positions in the UP administration. Among them are Vice President for Academic Affairs Gisela Concepcion, Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, UP College of Law Dean Danilo Concepcion and Diliman Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Benito Pacheco.
Former Diliman Chancellors Roger Posadas and Caesar Saloma are also nominees, as well as retired UPD College of Arts and Letters professor Consolacion Alaras.
Also in the list are officials from government agencies, a radio broadcaster and former senator respectively: Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner J. Prospero de Vera, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara and former Senator Orlando Mercado.
Requirements for each nominee include a Master’s degree, “substantial academic experience at the tertiary level,” the ability to serve the full term of six years before turning 70, and the absence of conviction for administrative and criminal offenses.
The Board of Regents, the highest decision-making body in UP, will be electing the next UP president on Nov. 15. Five candidates will remain on the list on Oct. 27, following a forum on the nominees to be held Oct. 13 at the UP Film Center.
